FORMER NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr Edgar Mitchell - a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission - has stunningly claimed aliens exist.
And he says extra-terrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions - but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades.
Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as 'little people who look strange to us.'
There was a better way to fly. It was called Concorde.

Well, don't take him too serious. He also did the Psi "experiments" on Apollo 14, and has always been known for a certain affinity to this kind of stuff.
Apart from that, it is summertime, newspapers have nothing to write, and they come up with all stories which otherwise wouldn't get mentioned.

I think the belief in aliens or even extraterrestrial life visiting the Earth is not the stuff of crackpots. However, what I find NOT believable is that there is some kind of massive cover-up IF it did happen with knowledge of the government. Our (U.S.) government is notorious for not being able to keep secrets. But somehow we are to believe that aliens have visited the Earth, our government knows about it, and has managed to keep it covered up for decades despite the fact that hundreds, if not thousands, of people would be in the know. That, to me, is more preposterous than believing in alien visitors.

It would be cool if true, but considering it's coming from a test pilot/engineer/astronaut that decided to dedicate his life to researching the paranormal of all things, I'm going to remain skeptical.

Joking aside, who's to say we are the only planet with intelligent life in the Universe. I would be disappointed to find out that there isn't other life out there.

I do believe there is life somewhere, as well. But this does not mean that fragments of it are on exhibition in Area 51.
While it is rather likely that life could exist, it is much more unlikely that it visits us. Think of it like this: Humanity exists for maybe 100 000 years, of which only the last 100 years have achieved a standard which makes us able to (theoretically) communicate with foreign civilisations. Only in the last few years we have started to discover planets of foreign star systems. Any other civilisation which wants to talk to us would have to catch us in this short timeframe. While I hope that humanity will exist for many years to come, this is unlikely from a statistical point of view.
So while E.T. likely exists, the probability that he will find us is much smaller.

Oddly, Mitchell, in the superb In The Shadow Of The Moon film was lucid, engaging and clear.
But, he did attempt that ESP experiment en-route back to Earth on Apollo 14, after leaving NASA formed a group dedicated to investigating the paranormal.
Though the main reason he left NASA, like many of the Apollo crews, was as much about the lack of future flights, unless you were prepared for a long wait for the Shuttle.
He joined NASA as someone with a commitment to using his part in Apollo, for conventional science.
But he admits the voyage of Apollo 14 profoundly changed him, he felt a sort of epiphany, a sense of oneness with the universe.
If true, this latest stuff is a step beyond his previous concerns.

Myself, I cannot easily put myself in his (Lunar} shoes, being one of only two living beings on a whole celestial body, the sharpness of vision in the airless environment, the sight of Earth that you could cover with your thumb, the movement on the surface in 1/6 gravity.

Same here, but that's not the same thing as saying Earth has been visited and the government is covering it up.

Let's face it, they could not even cover up a two bit 'operation' like the Watergate burglaries, which had very few people actually involved.
Why don't more people ever consider this?

Quite. it's possible we've been visited, but I think the odds are likely against it. We really only 'announced' ourselves perhaps 70-75 years ago with the advent of higher power FM radio and TV stations. So how many advanced life forms might there by within a 75 light year radius that were even _interested_ in contacting us ? Had they been listening in, that is.

Almost certainly we're not the only spot with life on it, hell, even Mars might yet yield something simple. But intelligence on Earth ? Come on !

Indeed we are not on our legs for that long, about 100.000 years. Dinasaurs did better: about 200 million years (& would probably still dominating earth if something hadn't killed them 65 million years ago). Dinos weren't very good in aerospace / telecommunications

If we assume space travel is even more problematic than radio communications, lets just talk about the latter:
1. We send out radio signals for around 100 years. Lets just look at the time from the 1930s to now, because in this time they have become more useful. This is around 80 years, but of those communications most are way too weak to be measured outside of our solar system. So if we concentrate on those SETI message sent in the 1970s from Arecibo, which can be received, we need
a) the signal to reach a foreign planet
b) a civilisation able to receive such a signal
c) the civilisation able to actually find the signal, which means they must be waiting for it
d) It must also be able to decode the signal
Now this is unlikely already. But even if they manage to do that, which I highly doubt, they must send an answer.
Now when it arrives here, we must wait for it, record it, find it and decode it. This is something we only start to be able to do right now with projects like Seti@home, which still are rather limited.
In 100 years from now, our abilities will very likely be much better already on this subject. But still, I highly doubt this will work soon enough. Maybe in 500-1000 years.
